18: Overweight trucks damage control
Overweight trucks damage our roads exponentially and as such are an economic offence. Penalties for exceeding the weight limit (500+ kg) should therefore no longer be regulated by traffic laws but by commercial law. The problem is that enforcement in international logistics is difficult.
The solution is twofold. On the one hand, the truck will be automatically impounded until the transport company pays the appropriate fine. They are responsible for the load and have power over the driver. On the other hand, the driver himself will be well looked after. He or she will be housed in a comfortable hotel, after which he or she will be sent home; also in comfort. There will be no costs involved, nor will the driver be fined.
After 3 months the truck will be sold by auction. In case of perishable goods, the contents of the truck will be sold before the expiry date.
