33: Street design; What is more effective?
A speed camera or a concrete barrier?
Problem: Many accidents happen in or around villages where motorized traffic encounters pedestrian and cyclists.
If in a village one wants to create a safe environment, why do we still have long, wide main streets in our villages? As long as you have wide straight streets, people will drive too fast. It is human nature and no traffic sign or police presence will change that.
Solution: It is possible to slow down traffic using simple means. Below some examples of very effective street design that will slow down cars, is very cheap to install, has almost no maintenance but is still car-friendly.
The presence of law enforcement becomes obviously completely superfluous.
